On May 1 this year, Estonia marked 20 years as a member of both the European Union and NATO. In celebration, a concert titled "Our Europe. Our NATO" will take place on Europe Day, May 9, at Freedom Square in Tallinn, featuring artists such as Bedwetters, nublu, Gameboy Tetris, and Tommy Cash. The concert, running from 19:30 to 21:00, will also be broadcast on ETV and ETV+ channels.

From July 11-14, over 60 historic tall ships will be on display across three harbors in Tallinn, with some open for public boarding. These international sailing training vessels have diverse histories, from former fishing and merchant ships to vessels built for military purposes, university training, and government use.

From July 1-5, a high-level conference of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network is taking place in Braga, Portugal, focusing on the importance of creativity in sustainable urban development. At the conference, the UNESCO Creative Cities Manifesto was signed, emphasizing the central role of culture in the sustainable development of cities.

Every summer, Tallinn renews the road markings around educational institutions to make children's journeys to school or kindergarten safer and drivers more attentive to small pedestrians. This summer, 324 pedestrian crossings around schools and 413 around kindergartens were updated, and on 1 September, police and municipal police officers will also help to ensure safety.

All citizens of Tallinn will have the chance to take part in the selection of the best athlete and team in Tallinn 2022. On the website you can make your selection and vote for your favorites in the following categories: best female athlete, best male athlete, best sports team, best youth athlete and best para-athlete - voting is open until midnight of 30 November. This year's best athletes and team of Tallinn were announced at a ceremony held in Tondiraba Ice Hall on Wednesday evening - the title of best female athlete was awarded to Kelly Sildaru, while the title of best male athlete was awarded to Janek Õiglane, the best youth athlete was swimmer Eneli Jefimova, the best para-athlete was the wheelchair curling team of Kätlin Riidbach, Signe Falkenberg, Andrei Koitmäe and Lauri Murašov and the best team was Tallinn FC Flora football team. Tallinn's best youth sports club was Nelson wrestling club.

In the social field, the year ended in Tallinn was marked by increased reimbursements for heating and electricity costs and the rise in the cost of living, as well as assistance for war refugees from Ukraine, but also by a number of new grants and the expansion of access to services.

In the field of education, attention was paid to improving the indoor climate and accessibility of schools and renovating kindergartens, while a major challenge was to solve the educational problems of children of war refugees from Ukraine.

Edgar Savisaar (31.05.1950 - 29.12.2022) was Mayor of Tallinn twice - from 2001 to 2004 and from 2007 to 2017.

Tallinn Tondi School will celebrate its 100th birthday this year. The centenary was celebrated with a festive concert on 19 January.
